Hemp: past, present, future for a Sustainable Architecture
2020
Cannabis, so classified by the botanist Linnaeus in 1753, is a plant with a long and tormented history. It has been a source of subsistence for many peoples who, since the dawn of time, have exploited its enormous and almost infinite potential. Hemp has survived eighty years of prohibition and the fierce attacks of the chemical, pharmaceutical, textile and other industries, which over the years have monopolized the world economy, contributing significantly to the process of ecosystem degeneration of the planet. Today, in the light of the compelling and urgent intervention actions, aimed at contrasting environmental emergencies, hemp returns to peep globally to help create a sustainable mode…
Techniques de construction traditionnelles et techniques romaines dans le théâtre d’Althiburos et les monuments de spectacle de l’Afrique Proconsulai…
2023
The contribution aims to study the relationship between the traditional construction techniques of the territories of Proconsular Africa and those imported by the Romans and used in the construction of entertainment buildings, in particular theaters and amphitheatres, also taking into account the importation of typological models, starting from the “case study” of the theater of Althiburos. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD there is a gradual introduction of Roman construction techniques, such as the opus caemaenticium, especially in the construction of substructures and vaults, sometimes with the importation of urban models, of techniques but also of Italic workers (just think of the opu…
Rebuilt the space using stone or brick vaulted systems: catching the contemporary challenge of construction tradition
2019
In the recovery and restoration sites, as well as in the versatile word of university research about construction history, its not infrequent to study stereotomy for the re-proposal of stony or tiled vaulted systems, sometimes complex for their constitutive geometry, equipment, preliminary/subsidiary carpentry works. It represents a didactic study-key also in Engineering and Architecture Schools, through laboratories that teach to future designers a know-how that can be easily spent in their professional repercussions.
Long-term effects of elevated CO2 on the population dynamics of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa: Evidence from volcanic seeps
2021
Population reconstruction techniques was used to assess for the first time the population dynamics of a seagrass, Cymodocea nodosa, exposed to long-term elevated CO2 near three volcanic seeps and compared them with reference sites away from the seeps. Under high CO2, the density of shoots and of individuals (apical shoots), and the vertical and horizontal elongation and production rates, were higher than at the reference sites. Nitrogen limitation effects on rhizome elongation and production rates and on biomass were more evident than CO2 as these were highest at the location where the limitation of nitrogen was highest. At the seep where the availability of CO2 was highest and nitrogen low…
3D reconstruction techniques made easy: know-how and pictures
2005
Three-dimensional reconstructions represent a visual-based tool for illustrating the basis of three-dimensional post-processing such as interpolation, ray-casting, segmentation, percentage classification, gradient calculation, shading and illumination. The knowledge of the optimal scanning and reconstruction parameters facilitates the use of three-dimensional reconstruction techniques in clinical practise. The aim of this article is to explain the principles of multidimensional image processing in a pictorial way and the advantages and limitations of the different possibilities of 3D visualisation.
Restoration of the feudal castle of Ventimiglia family in Castelbuono (PA)
2014
This paper concerns the restoration of the castle of Ventimiglia family in Castelbuono; the initial part, come from the medieval period (XIVth century), underwent considerable transformations in the XVth century by Giovanni Ventimiglia, Count of Geraci. He transformed the old castle, which is primarily defensive, in their own home and restored the chapel dedicated to S. Anna, then reconfigured in 1683. Since the XIXth century the castle had a progressive deterioration and in 1920 it was purchased by the Municipality of Castelbuono. The postwar years were characterized of a further deterioration of the castle; it was remedied with partial actions since 1978. These interventions have been coo…
Public wash-houses in Portugal: spaces of aggregation and sanitary aid. The case of study of the city of Aveiro
2019
This paper investigates the typology of the Portuguese public wash-houses that represents a very important sanitary aid and a space of social aggregation. More particularly, the most common features of such a typology will be outlined: architectural configuration, materials and technology, constructive characteristics, hydraulic equipment, historical evolution. These simple but highly functional little buildings are spread across the whole country and had been extremely important for the population since the middle age. In the last two centuries, new wash-houses were built, also following the scientific advances and the novel health requirements that spread in Europe between the XIX and XX …
Traditional Architecture and seismic security. Earthquake in the Madonie inner mountain area of Sicily: damages and construction techniques
2017
Role of Sky-gardens in Improving Energy Performance of Tall Buildings
2018
Natural ventilation has been used as a passive strategy for many decades but only now its importance in tall buildings for addressing the issues of high energy usage and reducing carbon footprints is emerging. Sky-gardens can play an important role in successful implementation of natural ventilation through amplification of natural wind speeds. This study presents a state-of-the-art review on optimization of tall buildings energy performance through incorporation of sky-gardens. Pros and cons of use of natural ventilation for multi-story buildings are highlighted. Details of involved technical difficulties and barriers in the construction and operation process of sky-gardens are also given.…
